Personal Response
This was such an interesting movie. I think Fargo could have easily been a Black Mirror episode, which is a huge compliment because I love that show. I love how the movie avoids emotional depth on purpose. All these terrible, super messed-up things are happening, but something about the acting, the setting, and the overall vibe keeps the audience from getting too emotionally involved. It’s a stylistic choice, and it works.
The only person who seems to have real feelings is Marge. She’s the only one consistently doing the right thing and genuinely caring about other people. Everyone else feels bland, detached, almost hollow, and I love this aspect of the storytelling.
It was shocking to me how someone as stupid as Jerry could create all this chaos. He is constantly emasculated throughout the movie, and I think that’s what pushes him to act the way he does. He doesn’t seem to care about his wife or his kid. He even assumes they’ll be fine, but he goes through with this plan just to feel a tiny sense of accomplishment in his life.
If this is a true story, I genuinely don’t understand how Jerry ever thought any of this could work. He was dealing with real criminals, and he never even instructed them to keep his wife safe. He is just a piece of shit. I feel so bad for this woman if this really happened.
